Liquid Diet

There are many weight loss diets that promise to give you a slimmer figure in no time, but very few of these diets allow you to drink your way to becoming thinner. A liquid diet restricts what you consume to mostly liquids or all liquids. These diets are commonplace in the medical field, as they allow patients to prepare for surgical procedures that call for little to no food in the intestines and recover from surgery until they can digest food normally. For those looking to loose weight, a liquid diet can help you control the amount of calories you take in each day.

Most liquid diet programs allow you to substitute one or two meals, usually breakfast and lunch, with juices, smoothies, shakes and other drinks. This leaves you with a healthy and balanced dinner and energy bars for in-between meals. Due to the low caloric intake of a liquid diet, you’ll take in fewer calories than you’re burning off and lose weight in the process.

There may be a few situations where you won’t be able to stay on a strict liquid diet. For instance, you may not be able to consume smoothies or other juices during a flight, since some airlines strictly prohibit certain liquids on airplanes. A number of other complications can come from careless planning of your diet, including a loss of essential nutrients, constipation due to a lack of fiber and loss of lean body mass from an insufficient protein intake. If you cut back on the amount of calories consumed by a large amount too quickly, your metabolism will slow down and cause you to gain back the weight as soon as you go back to your old diet.

If you’re interested in taking advantage of a liquid diet, you may be interested in joining liquid clubs and other dietary support groups that cater to liquid dieters. It’s also a good idea to talk to your doctor or dietician before starting this dieting regimen.
